Co-Counsel & Referral Management

Share cases and split fees without the chaos.

Referrals are the lifeblood of many PI practices, but managing them is a mess of handshake deals, email chains, and spreadsheets that nobody updates. inTrial gives you a structured system for tracking referrals in and out, configuring fee splits, sharing case access with partner firms, and ensuring every referral fee is accounted for at settlement. No more lost referrals, no more disputed splits, no more fees left uncollected.

Included in your subscription. Standalone tools charge $30-50/user/month for referral management.

Frequently asked questions

How does co-counsel access work?
When you add a partner firm to a case, you configure their access level — view only, upload documents, or full edit access. Partner firm team members log into their own inTrial account and see the shared case in their dashboard. All actions are logged in the activity feed so both firms have full transparency.
How are referral fees calculated at settlement?
When a referred case settles, inTrial automatically calculates each firm's share based on the configured fee split. The referral fee is itemized in the settlement statement and flagged for disbursement. Both parties can review the calculation before distribution.
Can we share cases with firms that don't use inTrial?
Yes. If the partner firm doesn't use inTrial, you can still track the referral, configure the fee split, and manage the relationship from your side. Document sharing with non-inTrial firms happens through secure external share links, the same way you'd share files with any outside party.
Does it support multi-firm splits?
Yes. Some cases involve three or more firms — a referring firm, lead counsel, and a specialty firm. inTrial supports any number of parties in a fee split, with percentage allocations visible to all parties. Each firm's estimated and actual payout is calculated automatically.
How do I find the right firm to refer a case to?
Your partner directory lets you tag firms by specialty (trucking, medical malpractice, products liability, etc.), location, and track record. When you have a case to refer out, search your network by specialty to find the best match. Over time, revenue tracking and outcome data help you identify your most valuable referral relationships.
